Changemaker Chronicles: The Salvation Army

Interview with Captain Heather West

The Salvation Army is well-known for its dedication to supporting individuals in need, and here in the Lakes Region,

its Laconia headquarters perfectly embodies that mission. As a faith-based organization, The Salvation Army aims to help individuals and families overcome everyday challenges. Salvation Army Captain Heather West finds helping Laconia-area residents through difficult times deeply rewarding, noting that their variety of programs and social services offer vital ways to bridge the gaps families face in modern life, providing a crucial helping hand to move forward.

The nonprofit’s menu of services includes children’s programs, women’s groups, and spiritual activities such as Bible study. At their headquarters on 177 Union Avenue, the Carey House Shelter provides essential housing, while the Friendly Kitchen soup kitchen serves breakfast Tuesday through Sunday and lunch Tuesday through Saturday.

In partnership with the New Hampshire Food Bank’s "Fresh Rescue Program," The Salvation Army also recovers high-quality surplus food from local grocery stores; offering fresh produce, dairy, meat, and baked goods to individuals and families facing food insecurity. Beyond nutrition, they provide critical social services like assistance with rent or heating costs, coordinate back-to-school supplies in the fall, and organize Christmas gift donations for the holidays. Currently, the organization is preparing to send 48 children, ages 7 to 17, to Camp Sebago in Maine for a week-long camp experience designed to help them discover new talents and build confidence.

One of The Salvation Army’s most visible community resources is its Thrift Store, which features clothing, household goods, electronics, toys, and books. Captain West notes that proceeds from the store make up about 60% of the local Salvation Army’s budget. By generating vital funds for local programs, offering affordable shopping for community members, and providing a convenient way to donate unwanted items, the store serves a triple purpose in the region.

Captain West, who has lived in various communities, highly praises The Greater Lakes Region Children’s Fund, calling its impact unique. She credits the Fund with providing numerous resources to help local individuals, stating, “We wouldn’t be able to do the good we do without The Children’s Fund. Seeing smiles on our clients’ faces is truly fulfilling.”

In turn, The Greater Lakes Children’s Fund recognizes The Salvation Army for the many ways it continues to make a positive, lasting difference in our community.
